Past Students Work

This is a video from the year before. There are many things within this video which are really good. One good thing is that the main actors lip synching is in sync at all times. This is an essential element of a music video and she has performed it perfectly. Secondly, the narrative is really clear to the viewer and it really realtes the the track itself, the narrative clearly buils up which is evident in this video. Secondly, i really like opening shot with the landscape of the city with her eyes blending in, it really shows a good use of technology.

Additionally, there is a dance sequence in this video. It is a good idea and what makes it better is that the moves or in sync and the dancers are in unison. Towards the end of the video where the music is at its fullest, the editing and cuts become more rapid in relation to the track itself. I really like this idea and will definately use it in my video.

Lastly, i like the choicd of song not just becuase i like the track itself but music video wise, you can do alot with it for e.g. it begins slow so you have a chance to shoot more slow shots and it gradually builds up and towards the end its at it maximum and the editing can be rapid and cuts be more frequent, at th end the track slows down to the same as the begining so again you can show a difference in editing techniques to accomodate to the music.

Overall, this is a good music video with a wide range of shots, a good narrative and good choicd of track.

Goodwin & Vernallis Theory

 

Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos. They are:

- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

He says that music videos are sometimes made by the link between the visuals and the song and the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to make  the video’s attractiveness more dominant.

Many of these features are present in all music videos, depending on the genre of the song and the artist.

Music Video Analysis - Rick Ross ft Lil wayne - john

In this particular shot, we can see the use of the canted angle shot. This shot graabbed my attension as it displays how unique it is. Secondly, having one of the artists in this shot makes it tat much better as  we see him through a different typr of shot, instead of the usual close up or mid shot.

This shot i have grabbed particularly for the reason of the setting and background. The choiceof setting of the music video is essentail into making it a successfull video. Here we see a kind of wasteland or nuvlear waste factory setting, the green toxicating smoke really relates to the setting. Also the the smoke adds gloomyness and the odd one or two lights again shows mystery.

The shot above is taken from some kind of tube. Out of all the shots so far this is what really inspires me as it again shows intelligence of the director as he makes use of what he has to produce as shot as brilliant as this. Moreover, i would really like to use this type of shot where the shot os shot through something as it again shows how different and unique it is in comparison to other shots.

Lastly, this is a shot from the security/ cctv camera within the music video itself. This once more shows the intelligance of the director and also adds to the stroy of the video. I would really like to also emply this idea into my video to show the use of technology and different ideas.


Overall, all these shots grabbed my attension straight away which indicates to me that i might have to use these type of shots for the same effect.
